Acquisition of social preference for relatives versus strangers is dynamic, but the developmental regulatory mechanisms have been unclear. Dulcis et al. found that sustained exposure to olfactory cues converts non-kin aversion to attraction via neurotransmitter switching coordinated by microRNAs.
